About the Written Test
Oklahoma's written knowledge test is administered by Service Oklahoma (formerly the Department of Public Safety) and is required for anyone applying for a learner permit. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 15 correct answers (75%) to pass. You have 60 minutes to complete the exam.
Where and How to Take It
The test can be taken in person at any Service Oklahoma tag agency or Drive Test Center. Oklahoma also offers online testing through the Service Oklahoma platform. Walk-ins are accepted for in-person testing. The test is computer-based in both formats.
What to Bring
You'll need proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and two documents proving Oklahoma residency. Applicants under 18 must bring signed parental consent and proof of school enrollment. The learner permit fee is $42.50.
Test Day
After submitting your documents and fee, you'll take the 20-question test. Questions cover Oklahoma traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving. You have 60 minutes, though most people finish much sooner. Results appear immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
If you score below 75%, you can retake the test the next business day. There's no limit on retake attempts. However, each failed attempt adds a $4 fee to your account, which is collected when you eventually pass and receive your permit.
Oklahoma-Specific Details
Oklahoma recently transitioned from the Department of Public Safety to \"Service Oklahoma\" for driver licensing services. The state's unique retake fee structure — where $4 is added per failure and collected at permit issuance — is an incentive to study before testing. The permit fee of $42.50 is among the higher fees nationally.
Learner Permit vs. Full License
After passing the written test, you receive a learner permit that allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat. You must hold it for at least 6 months before taking the road test for a full Class D license. Under-18 drivers must complete a driver education course.
