ProAbout the Missouri DMV Test
Missouri's knowledge test is administered at Missouri State Highway Patrol driver examination stations — an important distinction, since you don't take the written test at the Department of Revenue (DOR) license offices where you get your actual permit. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions, and you need 80% (20 out of 25 correct) to pass. It's based on the Missouri Driver Guide.
The test is taken on a computer and is available in 12 languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Walk-ins are accepted, so you don't need an appointment. Just make sure you go to a Highway Patrol examination station, not a DOR license office.
At just $3.50 for the permit, Missouri has one of the lowest fees in the country. If you fail, you can retake the test the next business day without an additional fee on your first retake. However, Missouri has a strict "three strikes" policy: if you fail 3 times within 90 days, your application is closed and you must restart the entire process from scratch.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security card, and proof of Missouri residency. The minimum age for an instruction permit is 15. Applicants under 16 must be enrolled in or have completed a driver education course. Parental consent is required for all applicants under 18.
Missouri uses a Graduated Driver License (GDL) system. After holding your instruction permit for at least 182 days (6 months), you can apply for an intermediate license at age 16. The intermediate license restricts passengers (no more than 1 non-family member under 19 for the first 6 months) and nighttime driving (no driving between 1 AM and 5 AM). These restrictions lift at age 18.
The test covers traffic laws, road signs, right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws (Missouri's legal limit is .08 BAC), and safe driving practices. Study the Missouri Driver Guide thoroughly — Missouri has unique rules about left turns at intersections and specific penalties for texting while driving for novice drivers.
