369 practice questions to help you master the Virginia DMV Test, 4 practice tests, 1 exam simulation

Virginia requirement to pass

40 questions on the real test, time limit not published. Virginia does not use a single passing percentage. The exam is a two-part gate: you must answer all 10 road-sign questions correctly before you can move on, then get 24 of the 30 general-knowledge questions right. Scoring 34 of 40 is not enough on its own: miss a sign question and you fail, whatever your total.

About the Virginia DMV Test

Virginia's knowledge test is administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles and has a unique two-part format. The first section has 10 road sign identification questions - and you must get all 10 correct before moving to the second section. The second section has 30 general knowledge questions, and you need at least 24 correct. In total, that's 34 out of 40 questions correct for an 85% passing score - one of the highest thresholds in the nation.

Where and How to Take It

The test is taken in person at any Virginia DMV customer service center. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are available online and recommended. High school students enrolled in driver education can also take the test at participating schools. Virginia is one of the most multilingual testing states, offering the exam in 24 languages. Oral exams are available by request.

What to Bring

Bring proof of identity, your Social Security card, two proofs of Virginia residency, and proof of legal presence. Under-18 applicants need a driver education certificate and parental consent. The learner's permit fee is just $3 - one of the lowest in the country - plus the applicable license fee.

Test Day

The two-part format is distinctive: you must score 10 out of 10 on road signs before you even see the general knowledge questions. If you miss a single sign question, you fail immediately and must retake the entire test. Once past the signs section, the 30 general knowledge questions cover traffic laws, right-of-way, safe driving, and DUI laws.

If You Don't Pass

If you're under 18, you must wait 15 calendar days before retaking the test - a significant wait compared to most states. Adults (18+) can retake once per day. There's no limit on total attempts. Study the Virginia Driver's Manual, paying special attention to road sign recognition.

Virginia-Specific Details

Virginia's two-part format and 85% passing score make it one of the most demanding knowledge tests in the country. The perfect score requirement on road signs means you must know every sign. Virginia requires 45 hours of supervised driving (15 at night) for under-18 permit holders, and the 9-month permit holding period is longer than most states.

Learner's Permit vs. Full License

After passing, you receive a learner's permit. Under-18 holders must keep it for at least 9 months, complete 45 hours of supervised driving, and pass the road test. Provisional license holders face nighttime (midnight-4am) and passenger restrictions until age 18.
