About the Nebraska DMV Test

The test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Nebraska Driver's Manual, and you need at least 20 correct answers (80%) to pass.

Where and How to Take It

In-person at any Nebraska DMV office. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 3 languages, including English, Spanish, American Sign Language.

What to Bring

Plan to bring the documents the DMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Nebraska residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Proof of driver education (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $10.5.

On Test Day

Your results are shown immediately on screen.

If You Don't Pass

No failed test can be retaken the same day. For the Class O car knowledge test the wait escalates: 1 day between tests 1 through 3, 7 days before the 4th, a supervisor sets the interval before a 6th, and after a 6th failure you must complete an approved driver training course or wait 90 days from your last failure. The motorcycle knowledge test is simpler: 1 day between attempts, with no limit on the number of attempts. Fail 3 drive tests in a row (Class O or M) and you cannot take another until you complete an approved driver training course or hold a valid learner's permit for 90 days. Nebraska publishes no retake fee and no attempt cap for the Class O knowledge test.

Minimum Age and Eligibility

You must be at least 15 years old to take the Nebraska knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and complete a state-approved driver education course.

After You Pass

A learner's permit (LPD) allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for at least 6 months before taking the road test. Provisional operator's permit at 16 with nighttime and passenger restrictions until age 18.
