ProAbout the Kansas DMV Test
Kansas's written knowledge test is administered by the Kansas Department of Revenue (DOR) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Kansas Driving Handbook, and you need at least 20 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Kansas Department of Revenue Division of Vehicles office. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The DOR lists the knowledge test in several languages, including English, Spanish. Confirm the current options with the DOR, since the languages a test is offered in can differ from the languages the handbook is published in. Kansas offers KnowTo Drive (knowtodrive.ks.gov) - an official online knowledge testing platform.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the DOR requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security number; Proof of Kansas residency; Parental consent (if under 16). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $10.
On Test Day
You have 60 minutes (online via KnowTo Drive) to complete it. Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
You can retake a failed written or driving test the next working day after paying the $1.50 re-exam fee. Fail either portion 4 times within 6 months and you must wait 6 months from your last failed exam, then file a new application for reexamination and pay $3. The optional online KnowTo Drive exam costs $10 for the first test and $8.50 for a retest. For CDL, Kansas publishes no attempt cap or retake wait; a CDL skills retest costs $10.00.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 14 years old to take the Kansas knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must complete driver education, hold the permit for 1 year, and complete 50 hours supervised driving (10 at night).
After You Pass
An instruction permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for 1 year. Restricted license at 15 with limitations. Full unrestricted license at 17.
