ProAbout the Mississippi DMV Test
Mississippi's written knowledge test is administered by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Mississippi Driver's Manual, and you need at least 24 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Mississippi DPS driver's license station. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The DPS lists the knowledge test in several languages, including English, Spanish. Confirm the current options with the DPS, since the languages a test is offered in can differ from the languages the handbook is published in.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the DPS requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Mississippi residency; Parental consent (if under 15); Proof of school enrollment (if under 17). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $7.
On Test Day
Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
Mississippi DPS does not publish a waiting period, an attempt limit, or a retest fee for the knowledge test. Contact your local Driver Service Bureau office to confirm when you can retest. If you are caught using a phone or notes during the test, the test is cancelled and you cannot test again for 6 months.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Mississippi knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and pass a vision test and knowledge test.
After You Pass
A learner's permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for 12 months before taking the road test. Intermediate license at 16 with restrictions on nighttime driving and passengers.
