ProAbout the Alabama DMV Test
Alabama's written knowledge test is administered by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's license. The test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Alabama Driver Manual, and you need at least 24 correct answers - an 80% passing score - to move forward.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at any ALEA driver license examining office across the state. Alabama operates on a walk-in basis, so no appointment is needed, though wait times can vary by location and time of day. The test is administered on a computer terminal at the office.
What to Bring
You'll need proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and two documents proving Alabama residency. Applicants under 18 must also bring signed parental consent and proof of school enrollment or completion. The application fee is $36.25, and payment is accepted at the time of testing.
Test Day
After submitting your documents and fee, you'll be directed to a computer terminal. The 30-question test covers road rules, traffic signs, right-of-way, speed limits, DUI laws, and safe driving practices. There is no formal time limit, so you can work through the questions at your own pace. Results appear on screen immediately after you finish.
If You Don't Pass
If you score below 80%, you can retake the test the next business day. There's no limit on the number of retake attempts, though the application fee may need to be paid again for each attempt.
Alabama-Specific Details
Alabama allows learner's permits at age 15 - one of the younger minimum ages in the Southeast. Driver education is required for applicants under 18. Alabama's Star ID (REAL ID compliant) is available as an upgrade when you apply.
Learner's License vs. Full License
After passing the written test, you receive a learner's license valid for 4 years. You must hold it for at least 6 months, logging supervised driving hours with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat, before you're eligible for the road test and full Class D license.
