About the Massachusetts DMV Test

Massachusetts's written knowledge test is administered by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, and you need at least 18 correct answers (72%) to pass.

Where and How to Take It

In-person at any Massachusetts RMV service center, or online through Mass.Gov/RMV for eligible applicants. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 37 languages, including Albanian, American Sign Language, Arabic, Armenian. Massachusetts offers online permit testing through Mass.Gov/RMV after an initial visit to a service center.

What to Bring

Plan to bring the documents the RMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Massachusetts residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Certificate of completion of driver education (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $30.

On Test Day

You have 25 minutes to complete it. It is also offered online. Your results are shown immediately on screen.

If You Don't Pass

Each learner's permit knowledge exam attempt costs $30, paid again through the Retake Knowledge Exam transaction in myRMV. The RMV does not publish a waiting period between failed knowledge attempts, or a cap on attempts. A failed road test is different: you must wait 2 weeks, and you may attempt no more than 6 Class D road tests or 6 CDL skills tests in a 12-month period.

Minimum Age and Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to take the Massachusetts knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and complete a state-approved driver education program.

After You Pass

A Class D learner's permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold permit for 6 months and complete driver education before taking the road test.
