ProAbout the Connecticut DMV Test
Connecticut's written knowledge test is administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 20 correct - an 80% passing score - to earn your learner's permit.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at any Connecticut DMV branch office. Connecticut strongly recommends making appointments online at ct.gov/dmv, as walk-in availability is limited. The test is computer-based and available in multiple languages including Spanish.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and proof of Connecticut residency. Under-18 applicants must have completed a DMV-approved driver education program (8 hours classroom + 8 hours behind-the-wheel). The permit fee is $19.
Test Day
After document verification and fee payment, you'll sit at a computer terminal for the 25-question test. Questions cover road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, and safe driving practices from the Connecticut Driver's Manual. There's no strict time limit. Results appear immediately.
Connecticut-Specific Details
Connecticut requires all under-18 applicants to complete a DMV-approved driver education course before taking the knowledge test - there's no option to skip it. The state also has strict secondary enforcement seatbelt laws and specific rules about highway merging on its busy interstate corridors (I-95, I-91, Merritt Parkway).
If You Don't Pass
You can retake the test, though you may need to schedule a new appointment. There's no limit on the number of attempts.
Permit vs. License
With a learner's permit, you can drive supervised with a licensed driver age 20+ with at least 4 years of experience in the front passenger seat. Under-18 drivers must hold the permit for 120 days and complete 40 hours of supervised driving (8 at night). Connecticut's graduated licensing system includes nighttime driving restrictions (11 PM to 5 AM) and passenger limits for the first year after licensure.
