ProAbout the Maryland DMV Test
Maryland's written knowledge test is administered by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Maryland Driver's Manual, and you need at least 22 correct answers (88%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) branch office. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 17 languages, including English, Spanish, American Sign Language, Amharic.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the MVA requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; 2 proofs of Maryland residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Proof of driver education enrollment (if under 18).
On Test Day
You have 20 minutes to complete it. Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
You can retest the next business day after one failed knowledge test, if an appointment is available. After 2 or more failures you must wait at least 7 calendar days, for both noncommercial and commercial knowledge tests. The behind-the-wheel skills test has its own rule: at least 1 business day. There is no MVA knowledge-test fee, but a CDL skills retest costs $20. MVA publishes no limit on attempts.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15¾ years old to take the Maryland knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and be enrolled in a Maryland-approved driver education course.
After You Pass
A learner's permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold permit for at least 9 months and log 60 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) before taking the skills test.
