ProAbout the Delaware DMV Test
Delaware's knowledge test is administered by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 24 correct - an 80% passing score - to earn your learner's permit.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at a Delaware DMV location. The state has offices in Wilmington, Dover, and Georgetown. Appointments can be scheduled online at de.gov/dmv and are recommended to minimize wait times. The test is computer-based.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity, your Social Security card, and two proofs of Delaware residency. Under-18 applicants need a parent or guardian present to sign consent. You must also provide proof of completion of a driver education course if under 18. The permit fee is $10.
Test Day
After document verification and payment, you'll take the 30-question computer test. Questions cover road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, and safe driving practices from the Delaware Driver Manual. There's no formal time limit, and results appear immediately.
Delaware-Specific Details
Despite its small size, Delaware has distinctive driving conditions. The state's test may include questions about toll roads (I-95, SR-1), beach traffic management in summer, and driving in the Wilmington metro area. Delaware requires a very experienced supervising driver - they must be at least 25 years old with 5 years of licensed experience, stricter than most states.
If You Don't Pass
You can retake the test, though a waiting period may apply. There's no limit on the number of attempts.
Permit vs. License
With a learner's permit, you must drive supervised by a licensed driver age 25+ with at least 5 years of driving experience - one of the strictest supervisor requirements in the country. Under-18 drivers must hold the permit for 6 months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night). Delaware's graduated license includes nighttime (10 PM to 6 AM) and passenger restrictions.
