About the District of Columbia DMV Test

The District of Columbia knowledge test is administered by the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 20 correct - an 80% passing score - to earn your learner's permit.

Where and How to Take It

The test is taken in person at a DC DMV service center. Appointments are required for most services and can be scheduled online at dmv.dc.gov. The Georgetown and Penn Branch locations are the primary testing sites. The test is computer-based and available in multiple languages.

What to Bring

Bring proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, or REAL ID-compliant document), your Social Security number, and two proofs of DC residency. Under-18 applicants need parental consent. The permit fee is $47.

Test Day

After document verification and payment, you'll take the 25-question computer test covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, and safe driving practices. There's no formal time limit. Results are immediate.

DC-Specific Details

Driving in the District has unique challenges that appear on the test: traffic circles (DuPont Circle, Washington Circle), embassy zones with special parking rules, restricted lanes, and rush-hour reversible lanes on major arteries. DC also has strict speed camera enforcement - there are more automated cameras per square mile than anywhere else in the country. Questions about pedestrian right-of-way are common given the city's heavy foot traffic.

If You Don't Pass

You can retake the test after a waiting period. There's no limit on the number of attempts, but you'll need to schedule a new appointment.

Permit vs. License

With a learner's permit, you can drive supervised with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. Under-18 drivers must hold the permit for 6 months and complete 40 hours of supervised driving (10 at night). DC issues provisional licenses with nighttime restrictions (11 PM to 6 AM) for new drivers under 21.
