ProAbout the Kentucky DMV Test
Kentucky's written knowledge test is administered by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC / KSP) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Kentucky Driver Manual, and you need at least 32 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at Kentucky State Police Driver Testing branches or Circuit Clerk offices. You must book an appointment before you go. Schedule online at telegov.egov.com/ksp. The KYTC / KSP lists the knowledge test in several languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic, Bosnian. Confirm the current options with the KYTC / KSP, since the languages a test is offered in can differ from the languages the handbook is published in.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the KYTC / KSP requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security number; Proof of Kentucky residency; Parental consent (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $12.
On Test Day
Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
Fail the written permit test and you can return the next available day. Fail the road skills test and you must wait 7 full days. Kentucky publishes no cap on attempts and no non-commercial retest fee: the $15 permit fee is a credential fee, not a test fee. CDL rules differ: a 24-hour wait after a failed knowledge test, a $5 retest fee for the combination, air brake and endorsement knowledge tests, a $50 retest fee for each skills attempt after the first, and a 7-day wait before a fifth skills attempt.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to take the Kentucky knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent, hold the permit for 180 days, and complete 60 hours supervised driving (10 at night).
After You Pass
An instruction permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for 180 days. Intermediate license at 16.5 with restrictions. Full license at 18.
