ProAbout the Indiana DMV Test
Indiana's knowledge test is one of the longest in the country at 50 questions, administered by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). The test is split into two sections: 16 road sign questions and 34 road rules questions. You must score at least 80% on each section — that means at least 14 correct on signs and at least 26 correct on road rules.
Where and How to Take It
The test must be taken in person at any Indiana BMV branch. Walk-ins are accepted at all locations, though you should check branch hours online before going — some branches have limited hours or may close early. The test is computer-based and available in multiple languages. Indiana does not offer online knowledge testing.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security number, and proof of Indiana residency. If you're under 18, parental consent is required. The permit test costs just $9 — one of the most affordable in the country.
Test Day
After document verification and a vision screening, you'll sit at a computer terminal. The 16 sign questions come first, testing your ability to identify regulatory, warning, and guide signs. Then you'll answer 34 questions on Indiana traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, OWI laws (Indiana's term for DUI), and safe driving practices. There's no formal time limit.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail one or both sections, you can retake the test the next business day. You'll pay a $2 retest fee per attempt. There's no limit on the number of retake attempts. You only retake the section(s) you failed.
Indiana-Specific Details
Indiana uses "OWI" (Operating While Intoxicated) rather than DUI. The state's legal BAC limit is .08%, but .02% for anyone under 21. Indiana has some of the strictest passenger restrictions for young drivers — no non-family passengers under 21 for the first 180 days of a probationary license. The $9 permit fee is among the lowest in the nation.
Permit vs. License
After passing, you receive a learner's permit. You must hold it for 180 days and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night). Supervised driving requires a licensed driver 25 or older (or a licensed instructor or spouse 21+) in the front passenger seat. At age 16 years and 90 days, you can apply for a probationary license with nighttime and passenger restrictions until 18.
