ProAbout the Maine DMV Test
Maine's written knowledge test is administered by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Maine Motorist Handbook and Study Guide, and you need at least 24 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch office. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 8 languages, including English, Spanish, French, Canadian French.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the BMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Maine residency; Parental consent (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $35.
On Test Day
Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
Maine's BMV does not publish a retake waiting period, an attempt limit, a driver-education requirement, or a retest fee. If you do not qualify, the examiner explains why and gives you a receipt to mail in, and the BMV Examinations Section schedules your next test. The only reexamination trigger in Maine law is permit expiry, not failure count: if you do not complete the driving test within the term of your learner's permit, you must be reexamined.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Maine knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent, complete an approved driver education course, hold the permit for 6 months, and complete 70 hours supervised driving (10 at night).
After You Pass
A learner's permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 20+ in the front seat. You must hold for 6 months. Intermediate license at 16 with restrictions. Full license at 21 (restrictions lift gradually).
