ProAbout the Iowa DMV Test
Iowa's written knowledge test is administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 35 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Iowa Driver's Manual, and you need at least 28 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at Iowa DOT service center, at participating schools, or at home through the Skip the Trip program. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 21 languages, including English, Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian. Iowa offers the 'Skip the Trip' program - students can take the knowledge test at participating schools or at home with a parent administering.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the Iowa DOT requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security number; Proof of Iowa residency; Parental consent (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $8.
On Test Day
Results are immediate at DOT offices. Skip the Trip home tests take 7 to 14 days to process.
If You Don't Pass
Iowa publishes no set waiting period, attempt limit, or retest fee for the non-commercial knowledge or driving test: if you fail, you may repeat the test at the examiner's discretion. CDL differs: a failed CDL knowledge or skills test cannot be repeated the same day, and the $25 skills-test segment fees apply again to a new appointment. A six-month lockout after 3 unsuccessful attempts exists in Iowa's rules, but it applies only to someone contesting a suspension or denial for incapability, not to ordinary applicants.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 14 years old to take the Iowa knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must complete approved driver education, hold the instruction permit for 12 months, and complete 20 hours supervised driving (2 at night) before intermediate license.
After You Pass
An instruction permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ (or parent/guardian/instructor) in the front seat. You must hold for 12 months. Intermediate license at 16 with restrictions until age 17.
