Start with general knowledge first. We recommend completing it before drilling pre-trip inspection questions.

Part one of the skills test and the most commonly failed. You identify and inspect components aloud, so the sequence matters as much as knowing the parts.

About the Pennsylvania Pre-Trip Inspection test

The Pre-Trip Inspection portion of the CDL skills test takes 30 to 60 minutes and is graded on a checklist of approximately 120+ items depending on the vehicle class. You must identify each component, state what you are checking for (cracks, leaks, loose mounts, proper inflation, etc.), and explain why it matters. The examiner can ask you to do a full inspection, a partial inspection, or specifically inspect the in-cab, engine compartment, external air brakes, coupling system, or trailer. You can fail the entire skills test by missing too many items here. This is a separate knowledge test from General Knowledge, required in every state under 49 CFR 383.71, and the PennDOT publishes the Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's Manual (PUB 223) as the study source for it.
