ProAbout the Nevada DMV Test
Nevada's written knowledge test is administered by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Nevada Driver's Handbook, and you need at least 20 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Nevada DMV office. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 2 languages, including English, Spanish. Nevada offers online knowledge testing through KnowToDrive Nevada at $6.75 per attempt.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the DMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Nevada residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Certificate of completion of driver education (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $25.
On Test Day
You have 60 minutes to complete it. Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
Nevada charges a $10 retest fee for every retake; the initial knowledge and skills test fee is $25. If you fail the written knowledge test you can retake it the next day, and if you are disqualified you can retake it after 24 hours. The DMV does not publish a limit on the number of attempts, and there is no rule requiring a driver education course after a set number of failures.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15½ years old to take the Nevada knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night).
After You Pass
An instruction permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for at least 6 months before taking the road test. Under 18 face nighttime and passenger restrictions.
