The Utah written knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions. You need 40 correct answers (80%) to pass. There is no time limit. Tests are administered by the DLD. Questions cover road signs, traffic laws, and Utah-specific rules. Read how DMV IQ prepares you for test day.

About the Written Test

Utah's written knowledge test is administered by the Driver License Division (DLD) and is one of the longest in the country with 50 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 40 correct answers — an 80% passing score — making thorough preparation essential. The test is closed-book, meaning no reference materials are allowed.

Where and How to Take It

The test is taken in person at any Utah DLD office on a computer terminal. Walk-ins are accepted, but scheduling an appointment online is recommended, especially at busier locations in the Salt Lake City metro area. The DLD website provides an office locator and appointment scheduling tool.

What to Bring

Bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and two proofs of Utah residency. Under-18 applicants need parental consent. Under-19 applicants must provide a driver education certificate. The learner permit fee is $19.

Test Day

After document verification and fee payment, you'll be seated at a computer terminal for the 50-question closed-book exam. Questions cover traffic laws, road signs, right-of-way, speed limits, DUI laws, and safe driving practices. There is no formal time limit. With 50 questions, plan for 30-45 minutes. Results are displayed immediately.

If You Don't Pass

You can attempt the test twice per day (if business hours allow). If you fail both attempts, you must schedule an appointment for retesting and pay a $19 retest fee for each set of two attempts. There's no multi-day waiting period between visits.

Utah-Specific Details

Utah's 50-question test is tied for one of the longest knowledge tests in the nation. The state has strict DUI laws with a 0.05% BAC limit — lower than the 0.08% standard in most states — so expect questions on this. Utah also requires driver education for all applicants under 19. The test is available in English and Spanish.

Learner Permit vs. Full License

After passing the written test, you receive a learner permit valid for 18 months. You must hold it for at least 6 months before taking the driving skills test. Under-18 drivers face passenger and nighttime restrictions. Utah's permit must be renewed if it expires before you complete all licensing requirements.
