ProAbout the Missouri DMV Test
Missouri's written knowledge test is administered by the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Missouri Driver Guide, and you need at least 20 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at a Missouri State Highway Patrol driver examination station. Note: the written test is taken at Highway Patrol stations, not DOR license offices. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The DOR lists the knowledge test in several languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, French. Confirm the current options with the DOR, since the languages a test is offered in can differ from the languages the handbook is published in.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the DOR requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Missouri residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Proof of driver education enrollment (if under 16). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $3.5.

If You Don't Pass
Missouri charges no fee for any written or skills test, so retests are free. You can retake a failed written test the same day, up to 2 attempts per day, until you pass. Skills tests are limited to 1 per day and to 3 tests in any 12-month period; after 3 failed skills tests the Highway Patrol cannot give you a fourth until the Director of Revenue approves further testing.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Missouri knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent.
After You Pass
An instruction permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for at least 182 days (6 months). Intermediate license at 16 with GDL restrictions until age 18.
