About the Michigan DMV Test

Michigan's written knowledge test is administered by the Michigan Department of State (SOS) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from What Every Driver Must Know, and you need at least 40 correct answers (80%) to pass.

Where and How to Take It

In-person at any Michigan Secretary of State branch office. You must book an appointment before you go. Book online at dsvsreservation.michigan.gov. The SOS lists the knowledge test in several languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese. Confirm the current options with the SOS, since the languages a test is offered in can differ from the languages the handbook is published in. Michigan offers online testing through KnowToDrive for adults 18+ at $6.50 per attempt.

What to Bring

Plan to bring the documents the SOS requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; 2 proofs of Michigan residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Certificate of completion of Segment 1 driver education (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $25.

On Test Day

Your results are shown immediately on screen.

If You Don't Pass

You cannot retake the test the same day at a Secretary of State office: you must reschedule for a different day. The in-office test is free; the online KnowTo Drive test charges $6.50 per attempt and can be taken twice per calendar day, so a second attempt is allowed the same day and a third the next day. Michigan publishes no total attempt limit, and CDL applicants have a flat 1-day wait after each failed knowledge test.

Minimum Age and Eligibility

You must be at least 14¾ years old to take the Michigan knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must complete Segment 1 of state-approved driver education for Level 1 license and hold Level 1 for at least 6 months.

After You Pass

Michigan uses a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. Level 1 (learner's license) allows supervised driving. Level 2 (intermediate) allows unsupervised driving with restrictions. Level 3 (full license) at age 18 or after 12 months at Level 2.
