How the Indiana BMV written test works

The Indiana BMV written knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Indiana driver handbook. To pass the Indiana exam, you need at least 40 correct answers - a 80% passing score. The Indiana test covers road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way rules, and safe driving practices specific to Indiana.

The Indiana BMV accepts walk-ins for the written test, though wait times vary by location and time of day.

In Indiana, the written test is offered in 20 languages: English, Arabic, Burmese, Chin, Croatian (+15).

If you don't pass: If you fail the knowledge exam you can retake it the next business day. A failed driving skills exam means waiting 7 days, and after 3 failed skills exams on a learner's permit the wait grows to two months from the last failure. CDL differs: both the CDL knowledge test and the CDL skills test can be retaken the next business day, once per business day. The BMV publishes no limit on attempts and charges no exam or retest fee, though third-party providers set the CDL skills-test fee and a lapsed permit costs $9 to renew.
