ProAbout the Idaho DMV Test
Idaho's written knowledge test is administered by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Idaho Driver's Handbook, and you need at least 34 correct answers (85%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Idaho county driver licensing office. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 12 languages, including English, American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the ITD requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security number; Proof of Idaho residency; Parental consent (if under 17½). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $25.
On Test Day
Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
You must wait 3 calendar days after failing a knowledge or skills test before retesting, and the same rule covers Class D, CDL, and endorsements. You pay the fee again on each retake: $5.00 for the knowledge test, and a skills retake costs the full original skills-test fee. Idaho does not publish a limit on the number of attempts.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Idaho knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must hold the permit for 6 months and complete 50 hours supervised driving (10 at night).
After You Pass
A Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP) allows driving with a licensed driver 21+ (or licensed driving instructor) in the front seat. You must hold for 6 months before road test. Full license at 16 under Idaho's graduated licensing program.
