ProAbout the Florida DMV Test
Florida's written knowledge test is administered by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Florida Driver's Handbook, and you need at least 40 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at a tax collector's office or FLHSMV office. Online through approved third-party providers (under 18 only). Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. Under 18 can take the Class E Knowledge Exam online through approved third-party providers.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the FLHSMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; 2 proofs of residential address; Completion of TLSAE course; Parental consent (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $48.
On Test Day
Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
You can retake the knowledge test at a tax collector office or online through a third-party provider. Online testing allows 3 attempts. Each retake costs an additional fee.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Florida knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must complete TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) course.
