About the Georgia DMV Test

Georgia's written knowledge test is administered by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Georgia DDS Driver's Manual, and you need at least 15 correct answers (75%) to pass.

Where and How to Take It

In-person at any Georgia DDS Customer Service Center. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 26 languages, including English, Albanian, Amharic, Arabic.

What to Bring

Plan to bring the documents the DDS requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; 2 proofs of Georgia residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Proof of school enrollment (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $10.

On Test Day

It is split into two sections: 20 Road Rules and 20 Road Signs. Your results are shown immediately on screen, broken out by section.

If You Don't Pass

If you fail, you must wait 1 day before retaking the test. After a 2nd failure the wait is 7 days. The test fee is forfeited when you fail.
