About the Iowa DMV Test
Iowa's written knowledge test consists of 35 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 28 correct answers — an 80% passing score — to qualify for your instruction permit. The test is administered by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and draws from the Iowa Driver's Manual.
Where and How to Take It
Iowa offers multiple ways to take the knowledge test. You can take it in person at any Iowa DOT service center, where the test is computer-based and results are immediate. You can also take advantage of Iowa's unique "Skip the Trip" program, where participating schools offer the test, or you can even take it at home with a parent or guardian administering it. The at-home option requires a computer (not a phone or tablet) connected to the internet, and processing takes 7–14 days.
What to Bring
For in-person testing, bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security number, and proof of Iowa residency. If you're under 18, parental consent is required. The permit fee is $8, with an additional $6 processing fee.
Test Day
The 35 questions cover traffic laws, safe driving practices, road signs and signals, vehicle maintenance, OWI laws (Iowa's term for impaired driving), sharing the road, and fatigue awareness. There's no formal time limit. The test is available in multiple languages.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail, you can retake the test the next calendar day. You get up to 3 attempts within 90 days of your application. Each retake may require a reexamination fee. After 3 failures or 90 days, you must reapply.
Iowa-Specific Details
Iowa issues instruction permits at age 14 — the youngest minimum age of any state, reflecting Iowa's agricultural roots where teens often need to drive on rural roads. The state uses "OWI" (Operating While Intoxicated) rather than DUI. Iowa also has unique requirements for teen drivers, including a mandatory driver education course.
Permit vs. License
After passing, you receive an instruction permit valid for 2 years. Under-18 drivers must hold it for 12 months and complete driver education plus 20 hours of supervised driving (2 at night). At age 16, you can get an intermediate license with nighttime curfew restrictions until age 17. Full licensing is available at 17.
