About the Nebraska DMV Test
Nebraska's knowledge test is administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You need to score at least 80% — that's 20 out of 25 correct — to pass. All questions are based on the Nebraska Driver's Manual.
The test is taken on a computer at any Nebraska DMV office. Walk-ins are accepted, so no appointment is needed. Nebraska offers the test in an impressive 11 languages including English, Spanish, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, Serbian, and Vietnamese — reflecting the state's growing immigrant communities.
The learner's permit (LPD) fee is $10.50. If you fail, you can retake the next business day. However, Nebraska has a strict policy: if you fail 3 times within 90 days, your application is closed and you must restart the entire process. You may also be charged a reexamination fee for retakes.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security card, and proof of Nebraska residency. Applicants under 18 need parental consent and must have completed a state-approved driver education course. The minimum age for a learner's permit (LPD) is 15. Nebraska also offers a school learner's permit (LPE) for students as young as 14 who are enrolled in driver education.
Nebraska's graduated licensing system includes the school learner's permit (LPE) at 14, the learner's permit (LPD) at 15, and the provisional operator's permit (POP) at 16. The POP comes with restrictions on nighttime driving (no driving between midnight and 6 AM for the first 6 months) and passenger limits. These restrictions lift at age 18 when a full Class O license is issued.
The test covers traffic signs and signals, right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws, and Nebraska-specific regulations. Pay attention to Nebraska's unique features: the state's rural highways, agricultural vehicle rules, winter driving conditions on the Great Plains, and the specific penalties for DUI offenses. Nebraska uses an implied consent law, and the penalties for refusal are significant.
