About the Illinois DMV Test
Illinois's written knowledge test is administered by the Secretary of State and consists of 35 questions in two parts: 15 traffic sign identification questions and 20 rules-of-the-road questions (which may be multiple-choice or true/false). You need an overall score of 80% — at least 28 correct answers — to pass.
Where and How to Take It
The test must be taken in person at an Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services facility. Walk-ins are accepted at all locations, and some facilities offer appointments to reduce wait times. The test is computer-based and available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Polish, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic. Illinois does not offer online testing.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, proof of Illinois residency, and proof of written signature. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must provide consent. The instruction permit fee is $20.
Test Day
After your documents are verified and fee is paid, you'll take a vision screening and then be seated at a computer terminal. The first section tests your ability to identify 15 traffic signs by shape, color, and meaning. The second section has 20 questions on Illinois traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, DUI rules, and safe driving practices. There's no formal time limit.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail, you may be able to retake the test the same day if appointments are available, otherwise you'll wait until the next day. You get up to 3 attempts within a one-year period. After 3 failures, you'll need to reapply and pay the fee again.
Illinois-Specific Details
Illinois uses the term "Secretary of State" rather than "DMV" for its driver licensing agency. The state's "Rules of the Road" handbook is the official study guide — it's free and available online or at any SOS facility. Illinois has strict graduated licensing for teens: 50 hours supervised driving (10 at night), night curfew restrictions, and passenger limits until age 18.
Permit vs. License
After passing the written test, you receive an instruction permit valid for 2 years. Teens must hold it for 9 months before the road test. During the permit period, you can only drive with a licensed parent, guardian, or driving instructor in the front seat. At age 16, you can get a graduated license with restrictions that lift at 18.
