About the Georgia DMV Test
Georgia's knowledge test is unique because it's split into two separate sections: 20 Road Rules questions and 20 Road Signs questions, for a total of 40 questions. You need to score at least 75% on each section — that's 15 out of 20 on both Road Rules and Road Signs. Failing one section means you only retake that section, not the entire test.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) administers all knowledge tests at their Customer Service Centers. No appointment is needed — you can walk in during business hours. Tests are computer-based and available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Just make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes before closing time.
The test fee is one of the lowest in the country at just $10 for the permit. However, this fee is forfeited if you fail, so you'll pay again for each attempt. After your first failure, you only need to wait 1 day to retake. After a second failure, the wait increases to 7 days.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security card, and two proofs of Georgia residency. Applicants under 18 need parental consent and proof of school enrollment. Georgia requires teens to be at least 15 years old for an instructional permit.
Georgia has some distinctive requirements for young drivers. Under Joshua's Law, 16-year-olds must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor, or complete 40 hours of supervised driving with a parent or guardian. The instructional permit must be held for 12 months and 1 day before you can apply for a Class D license.
The Road Rules section tests your knowledge of Georgia traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, DUI laws (Georgia's legal limit is .08 BAC, but under 21 it's .02), and safe driving practices. The Road Signs section focuses on recognizing and understanding regulatory, warning, and guide signs. Study both sections of the Georgia DDS Driver's Manual equally.
Once you pass both sections, you'll receive your instructional permit (Class CP) on the spot. This allows you to drive with a licensed adult 21 or older in the front passenger seat. The best way to prepare is active practice. Start with a free test below.
