About the Michigan DMV Test
Michigan's knowledge test is one of the longest in the country with 50 multiple-choice questions covering road signs, traffic laws, and driving restrictions. You need to get at least 40 questions correct (80%) to pass. The test is based on the "What Every Driver Must Know" manual published by the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS).
The test is available at any Secretary of State branch office, though you'll need an appointment — Michigan switched to appointment-only service in recent years. Book online at dsvsreservation.michigan.gov. The test is administered on computer kiosks and is available in 18+ languages including English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese.
Michigan is one of the progressive states that offers online testing through KnowToDrive for adults 18 and older. The online test costs $6.50 per attempt (a convenience fee), while the standard permit fee is $25. You can take the online test from home, making it one of the most convenient options available.
Bring your proof of identity, Social Security card, and two proofs of Michigan residency. If you're under 18, you'll also need parental consent and proof of completing Segment 1 of a state-approved driver education course. Michigan's minimum age for a Level 1 license is 14 years and 9 months.
If you fail, you can retake the test the next business day. However, after 3 failures, you must wait 30 days before trying again. Given that the test has 50 questions, each individual question has less impact on your overall score — you can miss up to 10 questions and still pass.
Michigan uses a three-level Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. Level 1 (learner's license) requires 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night. After holding Level 1 for at least 6 months with no crashes or moving violations, you can advance to Level 2 (intermediate), which allows unsupervised driving but with restrictions on nighttime driving and teen passengers. Full unrestricted driving comes at Level 3, either at age 18 or after 12 months at Level 2.
