About the Minnesota DMV Test
Minnesota's knowledge test is administered by the Department of Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) and features 40 multiple-choice questions. You need to score 80% — that's 32 out of 40 correct — to pass. The questions are drawn from the Minnesota Driver's Manual and cover traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
The test is taken on a computer at any DVS exam station across the state. Walk-ins are accepted, but scheduling an appointment is recommended to reduce wait times, especially at busy locations in the Twin Cities metro area. The test is available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Vietnamese, and several others reflecting Minnesota's diverse population.
One of Minnesota's most driver-friendly policies is the fee structure. Your first two attempts at the knowledge test are completely free. Starting with the third attempt, you'll pay a $10 fee for each additional try. You can retake the test the next business day after any failure, and there's a limit of one test per day.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security number, and proof of Minnesota residency. Applicants under 18 need parental consent and a Blue Card (Certificate of Completion) from an approved driver education program. The minimum age for an instruction permit is 15.
Minnesota's graduated licensing system requires teen drivers to hold their instruction permit for at least 6 months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (15 at night) before they can get a provisional license. The provisional license comes with restrictions on passengers and nighttime driving that lift at age 18.
The test covers standard topics including traffic signs and signals, right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws, and safe driving techniques. Pay special attention to Minnesota-specific topics like winter driving safety, the state's implied consent law, the Move Over law, and rules about school buses. Minnesota winters make knowledge of ice and snow driving particularly important. Practice with free questions below to gauge your readiness.
