ProAbout the Indiana DMV Test
Indiana's written knowledge test is administered by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. Questions are drawn from the Indiana Driver's Manual. Indiana BMV requires 80% on each of the two sections (road signs, and traffic rules) rather than one overall score, and does not publish a total question count. The count shown is our working estimate, not an official BMV figure.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Indiana BMV branch. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 20 languages, including English, Arabic, Burmese, Chin.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the BMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security number; Proof of Indiana residency; Parental consent (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $9.
On Test Day
It is split into two sections: 16 road sign questions and 34 road rules questions. Your results are shown immediately on screen, broken out by section.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail the knowledge exam you can retake it the next business day. A failed driving skills exam means waiting 7 days, and after 3 failed skills exams on a learner's permit the wait grows to two months from the last failure. CDL differs: both the CDL knowledge test and the CDL skills test can be retaken the next business day, once per business day. The BMV publishes no limit on attempts and charges no exam or retest fee, though third-party providers set the CDL skills-test fee and a lapsed permit costs $9 to renew.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Indiana knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent, hold the permit for 180 days, and complete 50 hours supervised driving (10 at night).
After You Pass
A learner's permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 25+ (or licensed instructor/spouse 21+) in the front seat. You must hold for 180 days before road test. Probationary license at 16 years 90 days.
