About the Written Test
Tennessee's knowledge test is administered by the Department of Safety and Homeland Security (DOS) and is required for all first-time driver's license applicants. The test has 30 multiple-choice questions divided into four sections: road signs and signals, road rules, drugs and alcohol, and safe driving practices. You need at least 24 correct answers — an 80% passing score.
Where and How to Take It
The test can be taken in person at any Tennessee Driver Service Center on a computer terminal. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are available at select full-service locations and can help reduce wait times. Uniquely, Tennessee also offers at-home online testing for applicants ages 15-17 under parental supervision using the Tennessee Proctor ID App.
What to Bring
Bring proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency, two proofs of Tennessee residency, and your Social Security card. Applicants under 18 need parental consent and proof of school attendance. The Class PD permit fee is $10.50.
Test Day
After document verification and fee payment, you'll be directed to a computer terminal. The 30 questions cover four distinct sections, so you'll need a well-rounded knowledge of Tennessee driving laws. There is no formal time limit. Results appear on screen immediately.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail at a Driver Service Center, you must wait 7 days before retaking the test and pay a $2 retest fee. For online test failures (ages 15-17), the wait is only 24 hours. Study the Tennessee Driver License Manual, especially the sections where you missed questions.
Tennessee-Specific Details
Tennessee is one of the few states offering at-home online knowledge testing, though this is limited to ages 15-17 under parental supervision. The state uses a graduated driver licensing (GDL) system with strict passenger and nighttime restrictions for drivers under 18. Tennessee also requires 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) before the road test for under-18 applicants.
Learner's Permit vs. Full License
After passing the written test, you receive a Class PD learner's permit. You must hold it for at least 180 days and complete supervised driving requirements before taking the road test. Drivers under 18 receive an intermediate restricted license before graduating to a full Class D license at age 18.
