On the New Jersey driving test, adverse weather questions are part of the 50-question exam. New Jersey requires a score of 80% (40 correct answers) to pass.

In rain, roads are most slippery during the first few minutes as oil mixes with water. Reduce speed, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. If you begin to hydroplane, ease off the gas and steer straight — don’t brake suddenly.

In fog, use low-beam headlights (never high beams, which reflect off the fog). In snow or ice, reduce speed significantly, brake gently, and allow extra stopping distance. Black ice is especially dangerous because it’s nearly invisible.
