ProAbout the Louisiana DMV Test
Louisiana's written knowledge test is administered by the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Louisiana Driver's Guide, and you need at least 32 correct answers (80%) to pass.
Where and How to Take It
In-person at any Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) location. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though booking ahead can shorten your wait. The written test is available in 11 languages, including English, Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi.
What to Bring
Plan to bring the documents the OMV requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; Proof of Louisiana residency; Parental consent (if under 18); Proof of driver education (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $32.25.
On Test Day
Your results are shown immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
You can retake a failed knowledge exam once the same day if time allows, so 2 attempts per day. OMV charges no retest fee, and there is no fee for the road skills test. It does not publish a wait after a second same-day knowledge failure, or a cap on total attempts. If you fail the road skills test, the examiner gives you a return date 1 to 30 days out, and you cannot retest before then.
Minimum Age and Eligibility
You must be at least 15 years old to take the Louisiana knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent, complete 38-hour driver education course, hold the learner's permit for 180 days, and complete 50 hours supervised driving (15 at night).
After You Pass
A Class E Learner's Permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for 180 days. Intermediate license at 16 with curfew and passenger restrictions. Full license at 17.
