About the Hawaii DMV Test

Hawaii's written knowledge test is administered by the Hawaii county driver licensing office (HDOT) and is required for anyone applying for a learner's permit or first driver's license. The test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Hawaii State Driver's Manual, and you need at least 24 correct answers (80%) to pass.

Where and How to Take It

In-person at county driver licensing offices (Honolulu, Hawaii County, Maui, Kauai). You must book an appointment before you go. The HDOT lists the knowledge test in several languages, including English, Hawaiian, Spanish, Japanese. Confirm the current options with the HDOT, since the languages a test is offered in can differ from the languages the handbook is published in. Hawaii offers online learner's permit testing statewide for applicants age 15½ and older.

What to Bring

Plan to bring the documents the HDOT requires: Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport); Social Security card; 2 proofs of Hawaii residency; Parental consent (if under 18). The knowledge test is part of a permit fee of about $12.

If You Don't Pass

Licensing is run by Hawaii's four counties, so rules and fees vary. If you fail the Class 3 knowledge test you must wait 7 days to retake it, and you pay the exam fee again each time: $12 for Honolulu's online permit test, other counties set their own. No county publishes an attempt limit (Honolulu's twice-in-one-day rule is a same-day sitting cap), or a road-test or CDL retake wait.

Minimum Age and Eligibility

You must be at least 15½ years old to take the Hawaii knowledge test. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent, hold the permit for 180 days, and complete 50 hours supervised driving (10 at night).

After You Pass

An instructional permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the front seat. You must hold for 180 days before taking the road test. Provisional license issued at age 16 with restrictions until 17.
