About the Written Test
Colorado's written knowledge test is administered by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 20 correct — an 80% passing score — to earn your learner's permit.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at any Colorado DMV office or authorized driver's license office. Appointments are strongly recommended and can be scheduled online through myDMV.colorado.gov. Walk-ins may be available but face longer waits, especially along the Front Range corridor (Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins).
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of Colorado residency. Under-18 applicants need parental consent and proof of driver education enrollment. The permit fee is approximately $18.52.
Test Day
After document verification and fee payment, you'll take the 25-question computer-based test covering traffic signs, road rules, speed limits, right-of-way, and Colorado-specific driving laws. There's no formal time limit. Results are immediate.
Colorado-Specific Topics
Colorado's test includes questions about mountain driving — chain laws, steep grade warnings, runaway truck ramps, and altitude effects on vehicles. The state's diverse terrain from plains to mountain passes means weather-related driving questions are common. Colorado also has specific laws about I-70 corridor travel during ski season.
If You Don't Pass
You can retake the test after a brief waiting period. There's no limit on the number of attempts.
Permit vs. License
Colorado uses a graduated licensing system. Under-18 drivers must hold a learner's permit for 12 months, complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), and pass a driver education course. The permit allows supervised driving with a licensed driver 21+ in the vehicle. After passing the road test, minor drivers receive a minor's license with nighttime and passenger restrictions until age 18.
