About the Nevada DMV Test
Nevada's knowledge test is administered by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You need to score at least 80% — that's 20 out of 25 correct — to pass. The test is based on the Nevada Driver's Handbook and covers traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
The test is taken on a touch-screen computer at any Nevada DMV office. Walk-ins are accepted, and you can use the Dash Pass system to reserve your spot and reduce wait times. Nevada also offers online testing through KnowToDrive Nevada at $6.75 per attempt, making it one of the states where you can take the test from home.
The initial testing and permit fee is $25, with retests costing $10 each at DMV offices. If you opt for the online test through KnowToDrive, it's $6.75 per attempt. The test is available in English and Spanish, both at DMV offices and online. Audio options are also available at office locations.
If you fail the test, you must wait at least 1 day before retaking. However, Nevada has a strict policy after 3 failures: you must complete a DMV-approved driver education course (at least 30 hours of classroom instruction) before you can test again. This makes it especially important to prepare thoroughly.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security card, and proof of Nevada residency. The minimum age for an instruction permit is 15 years and 6 months. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and complete a driver education course.
Nevada's graduated licensing system requires teens to hold their instruction permit for at least 6 months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night). Under-18 drivers face nighttime restrictions (no driving midnight to 5 AM for the first 6 months) and passenger limits. Pay special attention to Nevada-specific laws about desert driving, highway driving (including Interstate speeds), DUI penalties (Nevada has zero tolerance for under-21 drivers), and the state's "Move Over" law. Las Vegas and Reno traffic patterns are also worth understanding.
