About the Idaho DMV Test
Idaho's written knowledge test is administered by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. With a required passing score of 85% — 34 out of 40 correct — Idaho has one of the highest passing thresholds in the nation. The test covers road rules, traffic signs, signals, and safe driving practices from the Idaho Driver's Handbook.
Where and How to Take It
The test must be taken in person at an Idaho county driver licensing office. Walk-ins are accepted, though office hours vary by location — especially in rural counties. Tests are administered on computer terminals. Idaho does not currently offer online knowledge testing.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security number, and proof of Idaho residency. If you're under 17½, a parent or guardian must provide consent. The license fee varies by duration: $25 for a 3-year license, $30 for 4 years, or $55 for 8 years.
Test Day
After submitting your documents and completing a vision screening, you'll be directed to a computer terminal. The 40 questions cover vehicle and equipment safety, traffic laws, road signs, signals, pavement markings, and safe driving practices. There is no formal time limit. The 85% passing requirement means you can miss only 6 questions — study carefully.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail, you must wait 3 days before retaking the test. Each retake costs a $3 retest fee. There's no limit on the total number of attempts. Idaho also offers a free online practice test on the ITD website that mirrors the format of the real exam.
Idaho-Specific Details
Idaho issues Supervised Instruction Permits (SIP) at age 14½ — one of the youngest minimum ages in the country, reflecting the state's rural character. The state follows a Graduated Driver's Licensing (GDL) program: after holding a SIP for 6 months and completing 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), teens can apply for a license at age 15.
Permit vs. License
The SIP requires a licensed driver 21 or older (or a licensed instructor) in the front passenger seat at all times. Once licensed, drivers under 17 face passenger restrictions — no more than one non-family passenger under 17 for the first 6 months. Full unrestricted licensing comes at age 17.
