About the Written Test
Mississippi's knowledge test is administered by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You need to score at least 80% — that's 24 out of 30 correct — to pass. The test is based on the Mississippi Driver's Manual and covers traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
The test is taken on a computer at any DPS driver's license station. Walk-ins are accepted at all locations, so no appointment is necessary. The test is available in English and Spanish. Mississippi is one of the more straightforward states when it comes to testing logistics — just show up during business hours with your documents and you can take the test that day.
The permit fee is just $7, making it one of the cheapest in the country. If you fail, you can retake the test after 1 business day. However, after 3 consecutive failures, you must wait 30 days before trying again, so it pays to study thoroughly.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security card, and proof of Mississippi residency. The minimum age for a regular learner's permit is 15. Mississippi also offers a temporary learner's permit for high school students as young as 14 who pass the vision and knowledge tests.
Mississippi's graduated licensing system requires new drivers to hold their learner's permit for 12 months before they can take the road test — one of the longer mandatory holding periods in the country. During this time, you must drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat. At 16, you can get an intermediate license, but it comes with restrictions on nighttime driving and the number of passengers.
The test covers traffic laws, road signs and signals, right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws, and Mississippi-specific regulations. Mississippi has an implied consent law, meaning refusal to take a chemical test when suspected of DUI carries automatic penalties. Study the Mississippi Driver's Manual thoroughly and pay attention to rural driving safety, as much of the state involves two-lane highway driving.
