How the Michigan SOS written test works
The Michigan SOS written knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Michigan driver handbook. To pass the Michigan exam, you need at least 40 correct answers - a 80% passing score. The Michigan test covers road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way rules, and safe driving practices specific to Michigan.
The Michigan SOS requires an appointment before you can take the written test. Schedule ahead to avoid delays.
In Michigan, the written test is offered in 18 languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French (+13).
If you don't pass: You cannot retake the test the same day at a Secretary of State office: you must reschedule for a different day. The in-office test is free; the online KnowTo Drive test charges $6.50 per attempt and can be taken twice per calendar day, so a second attempt is allowed the same day and a third the next day. Michigan publishes no total attempt limit, and CDL applicants have a flat 1-day wait after each failed knowledge test.
