CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Test
The Pre-Trip Inspection is the first part of the CDL skills test and one of the most failed components. Before you ever start the engine on test day, you must walk around your vehicle and identify, name, and explain the function of dozens of components, from coupling devices to brake chambers to suspension parts. The examiner is looking for systematic, vocalized, and thorough inspection technique.
This endorsement is part of our free CDL practice tests covering all classes and endorsements.
Requirements
- Hold a valid CDL learner's permit (must be issued at least 14 days before the skills test)
- Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) including the behind-the-wheel pre-trip module
- Bring a CDL-qualifying vehicle (matching the class and endorsements you are testing for)
- Bring a current DOT medical certificate (MEC) and valid driver's license
- Be able to verbally explain each inspection step to the examiner
What's on the Test
The Pre-Trip Inspection portion of the CDL skills test takes 30 to 60 minutes and is graded on a checklist of approximately 120+ items depending on the vehicle class. You must identify each component, state what you are checking for (cracks, leaks, loose mounts, proper inflation, etc.), and explain why it matters. The examiner can ask you to do a full inspection, a partial inspection, or specifically inspect the in-cab, engine compartment, external air brakes, coupling system, or trailer. You can fail the entire skills test by missing too many items here.
Study Tips
Build a verbal script you follow every time, consistency is what passes this test
Practice with a real vehicle, not just a manual, muscle memory matters
Memorize the proper order: in-cab → engine compartment → exterior front → driver-side → coupling system → rear → passenger-side → cab return
For air brakes, master the 7-step air brake check including the static leak test, applied leak test, low air warning, and spring brake activation
When in doubt, say what you see ('no leaks, no cracks, properly mounted'), silent inspections lose points even if your eyes saw everything
Pick your state to start
The Pre-Trip Inspection test content is federal - but fees, ID rules, and test centers vary by state. Pick yours to get the right Pre-Trip Inspection practice test and your state CDL handbook.
