CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Test

The Pre-Trip Inspection is the first part of the CDL skills test and one of the most failed components. Before you ever start the engine on test day, you must walk around your vehicle and identify, name, and explain the function of dozens of components, from coupling devices to brake chambers to suspension parts. The examiner is looking for systematic, vocalized, and thorough inspection technique.

This endorsement is part of our free CDL practice tests covering all classes and endorsements.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid CDL learner's permit (must be issued at least 14 days before the skills test)
  • Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) including the behind-the-wheel pre-trip module
  • Bring a CDL-qualifying vehicle (matching the class and endorsements you are testing for)
  • Bring a current DOT medical certificate (MEC) and valid driver's license
  • Be able to verbally explain each inspection step to the examiner

What's on the Test

The Pre-Trip Inspection portion of the CDL skills test takes 30 to 60 minutes and is graded on a checklist of approximately 120+ items depending on the vehicle class. You must identify each component, state what you are checking for (cracks, leaks, loose mounts, proper inflation, etc.), and explain why it matters. The examiner can ask you to do a full inspection, a partial inspection, or specifically inspect the in-cab, engine compartment, external air brakes, coupling system, or trailer. You can fail the entire skills test by missing too many items here.

Study Tips

1

Build a verbal script you follow every time, consistency is what passes this test

2

Practice with a real vehicle, not just a manual, muscle memory matters

3

Memorize the proper order: in-cab → engine compartment → exterior front → driver-side → coupling system → rear → passenger-side → cab return

4

For air brakes, master the 7-step air brake check including the static leak test, applied leak test, low air warning, and spring brake activation

5

When in doubt, say what you see ('no leaks, no cracks, properly mounted'), silent inspections lose points even if your eyes saw everything

Pre-Trip Inspection FAQ

A complete pre-trip inspection for the CDL skills test typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on vehicle class and how thorough the examiner wants you to be. The examiner may ask you to do a full inspection or focus on a specific section (in-cab, engine compartment, coupling system, etc.). Practice doing a full inspection in under 45 minutes so test-day nerves do not slow you down.
No. The CDL skills test requires you to perform the pre-trip from memory. You cannot use written notes, study sheets, or checklists during the test. This is why systematic verbal scripts and repeated practice are critical to passing.
The most commonly missed items are: brake chamber and slack adjuster condition, leaking grease seals on wheel hubs, missing or loose lug nuts, frayed safety chains on the trailer coupling, the proper seven-step air brake test sequence, and the in-cab inspection of dash gauges, warning lights, and seat-belt condition. Practice these areas extra carefully.
Yes. The pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving are all parts of the same CDL skills test. If you accumulate too many errors on the pre-trip, you fail before you ever drive. Most states require you to wait 14 days before re-testing.
The pre-trip inspection is done before you drive the vehicle and focuses on confirming the vehicle is safe to operate. The post-trip inspection is done after the trip and focuses on documenting any defects discovered during driving so the next driver knows about them. Federal law requires both pre-trip and post-trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) for most commercial vehicles.
