About the Written Test
Arizona's written knowledge test is administered by the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) and consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 24 correct — an 80% passing score — to earn your instruction permit.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at any MVD office or authorized third-party provider across Arizona. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments can be made through ServiceArizona.com to reduce wait times. The test is computer-based at MVD locations.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and proof of Arizona residency. Under-18 applicants need parental consent. The permit application fee is $7 — one of the lowest in the country. Arizona also requires proof of legal presence for non-citizens.
Test Day
After document verification and fee payment, you'll take the 30-question computer test covering road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, and safe driving practices. There's no formal time limit. Results appear immediately on screen.
Arizona-Specific Quirks
Arizona is unique in several ways. The state issues instruction permits valid until age 65 — there's no traditional expiration-and-renewal cycle for young drivers. This means your permit essentially lasts decades. Arizona also doesn't use a traditional graduated licensing system. Additionally, Arizona offers testing in multiple languages including Spanish.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail, you can retake the test the next business day. There's no limit on attempts, and you only pay the application fee once per permit cycle.
Permit vs. License
With your instruction permit, you can drive supervised with a licensed driver age 21+ in the front seat. Applicants under 18 must hold the permit for at least 6 months and complete 30 hours of supervised driving before taking the road test.
