The Idaho road test
A plain-language guide, checked against the Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles (Idaho ITD (county DMV + independent examiners)): who the test is for, what to bring, how it is scored, and what a retake really costs.
The rule that decides your path
The Idaho road test, also called the behind-the-wheel or driving skills test, is the final exam the Idaho ITD (county DMV + independent examiners) gives before it issues a driver's license. New drivers can take the Idaho driving test at 15, after logging 50 hours of supervised driving.
Idaho sets a specific pre-license education step every new driver has to clear. Under-17 drivers need driver training and follow the graduated licensing (GDL) rules. Under-16 drivers are limited to daytime driving unless a licensed adult 21 or older is in the front seat. New residents with an out-of-state license are exempt from the supervised period.
Below you'll find the full Idaho road test requirements: who qualifies, what to bring, how examiners score the drive, and the retake rules if you don't pass the first time. On our Driving Index, Idaho's written knowledge test ranks 5th-hardest of 51.

Supervised hours before the Idaho road test
These are hours you spend driving with a licensed adult, usually a parent, before you can take the test. Keep a log as you go, on paper or in an app, because the state can ask to see it. Practice in a mix of conditions, day and night, highways and quiet streets, rain and clear weather, and get the night hours in early, since those are the ones most people leave to the last minute.

Documents
Your vehicle must have
Who comes with you. No passengers during the skills test. With a waiver, exceptions can include one parent or guardian (for a minor 17 or younger), a translator, law enforcement, or a missionary companion.
If you fail the Idaho road test
Here's how a retake works in Idaho: 3 full days. You re-pay both fees (the county DMV fee and the Skills Test Examiner fee)
Beyond any fee, a retry usually means another day off work or school, another ride to the office, and another car to borrow, so failing costs far more than it looks on paper.
Passing on the first try is the cheapest way through. A first license runs $35 for an adult 4-year license; $20 for 1 year, $30 for 3 years, or $60 for 8 years.
How the Idaho road test is scored
You may miss no more than 3 items on the inspection. On the drive, 12 or fewer errors passes, a Critical Driving Error is an automatic fail, and missing 5 or more of the same skill counts as a Critical Driving Error.
Mistakes that end the test right away
Do any of these and the examiner stops the drive, no matter how well the rest went.
- A dangerous action
- Disobeying an emergency or safety vehicle
- Disobeying police or safety personnel
- Disobeying a traffic sign or signal
- Driving up onto the curb or sidewalk
- Requiring intervention by, or disobeying, the skills test examiner
- A habitual violation (missing 5 or more of the same scored skill)
- A lane violation
- Passenger interference
- Speeding
- Street parking more than 18 inches from the curb and impeding traffic
- Striking an object
