About the Maine DMV Test
Maine's written knowledge test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 24 correct — an 80% passing score — to earn your learner's permit. The test is administered by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), which operates under the Secretary of State's office.
Where and How to Take It
The test must be taken in person at a Maine BMV branch office. Walk-ins are accepted at all locations, but the BMV recommends arriving at least one hour before the office closes to ensure you have enough time to complete the test. The test is computer-based with no formal time limit. Maine does not offer online knowledge testing.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and proof of Maine residency. If you're under 18, parental consent is required in person. The test fee is $35 — somewhat higher than the national average. Payment must be made at the time of testing.
Test Day
After submitting your documents and fee, you'll complete a vision screening and then sit at a computer terminal. The 30 questions cover traffic signs, road rules, right-of-way, speed limits, OUI laws (Maine uses "OUI" — Operating Under the Influence), and safe driving practices. All content comes from the Maine Motorist Handbook and Study Guide.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail, you can retake the test the next business day. The $35 fee must be paid again for each attempt. After 3 failures, Maine requires you to complete an approved driver education course before you can retake the test — a unique requirement that emphasizes the state's focus on proper training.
Maine-Specific Details
Maine uses "OUI" (Operating Under the Influence) rather than DUI. The state has some of the most comprehensive supervised driving requirements in the country — 70 hours with 10 at night, well above the national average. Maine also has extended graduated licensing restrictions: some passenger and nighttime limits persist until age 21.
Permit vs. License
After passing, you receive a learner's permit. You must hold it for 6 months, complete an approved driver education course, and log 70 hours of supervised driving (10 at night). Supervised driving requires a licensed driver 20 or older in the front seat (not 21, as in most states). At age 16, you can get an intermediate license with passenger and nighttime restrictions that gradually lift until age 21.
