About the Written Test
Wisconsin's knowledge test is administered by the Department of Transportation's Division of Motor Vehicles and is one of the longest in the country with 50 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 40 correct answers — an 80% passing score. The test draws from the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at any Wisconsin DMV service center on computer-based kiosk stations. Walk-ins are accepted. For applicants ages 15-17, Wisconsin also offers online testing through the KnowToDrive program. The test is available in 10 languages, reflecting Wisconsin's diverse population, including English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Burmese, and Chinese.
What to Bring
Bring proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security number, and proof of Wisconsin residency. Under-18 applicants need parental consent. The test fee is $10, payable whether you pass or fail.
Test Day
After checking in at the DMV service center, you'll be directed to a computer kiosk. The 50 questions cover traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and rules of the road. There is no formal time limit. With 50 questions, plan for 30-45 minutes. Results are displayed immediately.
If You Don't Pass
If you score below 80%, you can retake the test the next business day. The $10 fee must be paid each time. There's no limit on retake attempts. Study the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, available in English and Spanish from the DOT website.
Wisconsin-Specific Details
Wisconsin's 50-question test ties with Utah for one of the longest knowledge tests in the nation. The state offers testing in 10 languages — including Hmong, reflecting Wisconsin's significant Hmong-American community. Wisconsin requires the supervising driver for permit holders to be at least 25 years old, which is older than most states. Winter driving, deer crossings, and rural road safety are important topics.
Instruction Permit vs. Full License
After passing the written test, you receive an instruction permit valid for 12 months (renewable for an additional 12 months). Under-18 holders must keep it for at least 6 months, complete driver education, and log 30 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) before taking the road test. The supervising driver must be 25+ (or a licensed spouse/parent).
