How many questions are on the Texas CDL knowledge test?

The Texas CDL general knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 80% (40 correct) to pass. The Special Requirements test is shorter. Most states do not publish its question count, but the 80% pass mark is federal under 49 CFR 383.135 and applies to every CDL knowledge test.

What's the minimum age for a CDL in Texas?

In Texas, the minimum age for a CDL is 18 (intrastate); 21 (interstate). Federal law requires drivers to be 21+ to drive a CMV across state lines or to transport hazardous materials, regardless of state minimum age.

Do I really have to pass this before the General Knowledge test?

Yes. Texas DPS administers the Special Requirements exam as a standalone written test that applicants take before the General Knowledge test. It is the reason Texas applicants sit one more exam than applicants in every other state.

Is this exam required in any other state?

No. Section 14 covers Texas commercial rules specifically, so no other state administers it. The federal endorsement exams such as HazMat and Tanker are required everywhere, but this one is Texas only.

About the Texas Special Requirements test

A standalone Texas exam at the federal 80% pass mark, which DPS requires you to pass before you sit the General Knowledge test. DPS does not publish a question count for it. Every question comes from Section 14 of the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Handbook (DL-7C), which sets the size, weight, lighting and emergency equipment rules Texas adds on top of the federal regulations. Those are state law rather than FMCSA rules, so studying for General Knowledge does not cover them.
