About the Written Test
South Dakota's written knowledge test is administered by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and is required for anyone seeking an instruction permit. The test has 25 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 20 correct answers — an 80% passing score — to earn your permit.
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at a South Dakota DPS driver exam station. Appointments are required and can be scheduled online or by phone at (605) 773-6883. The test is computer-based and drawn from the South Dakota Driver Manual, which is available for free download from the DPS website.
What to Bring
You'll need proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and proof of South Dakota residency. Applicants under 18 must bring signed parental consent. The instruction permit fee is $28, payable at the time of testing.
Test Day
After your documents are verified and the fee is paid, you'll be seated at a computer terminal. The 25-question test covers road signs, traffic laws, right-of-way, speed limits, DUI laws, and safe driving practices. There is no formal time limit, so you can take your time. Results are displayed immediately on screen.
If You Don't Pass
If you score below 80%, you can retake the test the next business day. However, you are limited to three attempts within six months of your application date. If you fail three times, you must reapply and pay all fees again.
South Dakota-Specific Details
South Dakota issues instruction permits at age 14, making it one of the youngest permit ages in the nation — reflecting the state's rural character where driving is often essential for daily life. The test is available in English and Spanish. Winter driving conditions, rural road safety, and wildlife hazards (particularly deer) are important topics to study.
Instruction Permit vs. Full License
After passing the written test, you receive an instruction permit. You must hold it for at least 180 days and complete supervised driving hours before you can take the road test. The restricted minor's permit (ages 14-16) limits driving to daylight hours with additional passenger restrictions.
