About the Written Test
North Carolina's written knowledge test is administered by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) and has a unique two-part structure. The main knowledge test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 20 correct (80%) to pass. Additionally, there is a separate road signs test with 8 questions where you must get at least 6 correct (75%).
Where and How to Take It
The test is taken in person at any NCDMV driver license office. Appointments are available online and strongly recommended — walk-ins are accepted but wait times can be significant, especially in metro areas like Charlotte and Raleigh. The test is computer-based.
What to Bring
You'll need proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and two documents proving North Carolina residency. You'll also need proof of liability insurance. Applicants under 18 must bring signed parental consent. The limited learner permit fee is $20.
Test Day
After your documents are verified and the fee is paid, you'll take two separate tests. The road signs test (8 questions, must get 6+ right) tests your ability to identify signs by shape and color. The knowledge test (25 questions, must get 20+ right) covers road rules, traffic laws, right-of-way, and safe driving practices. There is no time limit for either test.
If You Don't Pass
If you fail either test, you must wait 7 calendar days before retaking — one of the longer waiting periods among U.S. states. There's no limit on the number of attempts. You only retake the portion you failed.
North Carolina-Specific Details
North Carolina's two-test format (knowledge + signs) is uncommon. The state also has a notably long permit holding period — 12 months — before you can take the road test. The state requires driver education for all applicants under 18 and has strict graduated licensing restrictions including nighttime curfews.
Limited Learner Permit vs. Full License
After passing both written tests, you receive a limited learner permit. You must hold it for 12 months, log at least 60 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), and then pass a road test for a limited provisional license. Full, unrestricted licensing comes at age 18.
