About the Written Test
New Hampshire's knowledge test is notable for several unique features. First, the state does not issue traditional learner's permits — instead, applicants go directly to either a Youth Operator License (under 18) or a full driver's license (18+) after passing both the knowledge and road tests. Second, the test is long at 40 questions with a 40-minute time limit, giving you exactly one minute per question.
The test requires an 80% passing score, meaning you need at least 32 out of 40 correct. It's administered on a touch-screen computer at any New Hampshire DMV office. Unlike many states, appointments are required — you cannot walk in for a knowledge test. Schedule online or by calling your local DMV office.
The $50 fee is among the higher state licensing fees and covers the knowledge test and license issuance. New Hampshire has one of the strictest retake policies in the country: you must wait 10 calendar days between retake attempts, make a new appointment, and pay the fee again. Each retake also features a different set of questions than your previous test.
The test is available in 8 languages: English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin, Portuguese, Farsi, and American Sign Language. An audio feature is also available — just request headphones from the licensing representative.
Bring your proof of identity (birth certificate or passport), Social Security number, and proof of New Hampshire residency. The minimum age is 15 years and 6 months. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent and completion of a state-approved driver education course.
New Hampshire's Youth Operator License comes with significant restrictions for the first year: no driving between 1 AM and 4 AM (unless for work or emergency), and no passengers under 25 for the first 6 months (except immediate family). These restrictions are taken seriously and violations can result in license suspension.
The test covers traffic signs, signals, right-of-way rules, speed limits, DUI laws, and New Hampshire-specific regulations. Pay attention to winter driving safety (New Hampshire gets significant snow), the state's motorcycle helmet laws (or lack thereof for adults), and seatbelt requirements.
